Reviews Here is what people are saying about the Brother HL-2240
Very pleased

This is my first laser printer and so far I'm very happy with it. It prints fast and the printing is crisp and clear. I don't find it unusually loud and the size seems just right. The duplex feature is awesome!

I do have a couple of issues though. One is that I've only had this printer for 2 months and have really not printed that much on it and I've gotten a low ink notice already. I always choose to print at 300 dpi and in toner saver mode. It seems to me that the toner cartridge that came with this printer prints even less than the one I buy for my cheap inkjet printer. I knew it was really just a starter toner, but I was hoping it would last longer than this.

The main disappointment is that I just discovered I cannot use the duplex feature on "user defined" paper sizes. I like to print books using half-size pages that are 5.5 x 8.5" - there is no option to choose this paper size so I must specify it and in doing so I lose the duplex option.

***UPDATE***

After reading reviews for the toner refill I became aware of a neat feature on the printer that allows one to print a report that shows how many pages has been printed and how much toner is left. I pressed the "go" button 3 times quickly and a one-page report printed out saying I had printed 661 pages thus far and that I still have approximately 40% toner left. This little tid-bit is actually in the manual, along with other uses for the "go" button.

So I feel much better now knowing I still have plenty of life left on the toner that came with this printer. I've changed my review from 4 stars to 5. While I'm still unhappy about being unable to print duplex on custom size pages, I think for the price this is an excellent printer.

USB Device Not Recognized

USB Device Not Recognized - that's the message I kept receiving when trying to install the printer.

I have an HP DV7 with Windows 7, 64 bit. I followed the instructions, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, tried plug and play, add a printer, restarted, wrote Brother tech support, google searches and it would not install. Brother's support response was a request for me to call them... No, I've already spent too much of my life on this. It appears that this is not a common issue.

When I used Windows support to detect the issue the recommendation was to reconnect the device and/or replace it. Done and done.

Amazon's return policy is great... well, except for the fact that you have to print the authorization form :-/
If you are ordering through a third party vendor I suggest reading their return policy before purchasing.

As for the printer itself, the instructions have you print a test page before connecting the printer to the computer. From what I saw, the printer works well. It printed a 2-sided test page in a few seconds and wasn't particularly loud. It was bigger than I expected and you are instructed to leave several inches clearance from walls/obstacles. This is not meant for tight spaces.

Jim's Printer Review

This printer is all what I expected. Very easy to set up and very good print quality for my home use. I really like the duplex feature and the optional ways to set this feature.
I replaced an older Brother printer which I used for many years before it gave out. Very pleased with the Brother printer quality and durability.
Ive read where some people mentioned this printer is a little noisy. Maybe slightly, but not an issue with me.

Brother Laser printer

I have had this printer for a few months now, Highly Recommend it!!! I have not had to replace the dry ink at all, Very Well Made, Have had no problems with it. I like how the paper loads in the front tray that pushes in and it holds alot of paper too, No paper hanging out on top like other printers. Awesome Printer !!!

Very noisy fan that stays on, and no USB cable included

This printer needs to be connected to your computer with a USB cable, which is NOT included in the box. Be sure to buy the right kind of USB cable.

It is very noisy while printing, which doesn't bother me. I have printed about 400 pages so far and the printing quality has been excellent.

Unfortunately, after printing a noisy fan stays on for a LONG time (more 10 minutes) before turning off. Since I need to put the printer on the table where I study, this is very distracting.

For printing quality for the price, I would give the printer a 5 star rating. But for noise, I give it a 1 star. Since I need to put the printer about 2 feet from where I study, the noise is a deal breaker for me.

I contacted technical support about the fan staying on a long time. They replied quickly and courteously to my question. Here is their response: "Thank you for your inquiry about your HL-2240D. The fan will cycle on and off to maintain the proper temperature of the fusing unit (the part that adheres the toner to the paper) even if Sleep Mode is turned off. Also, the fan will run continuously for approximately 15 minutes after the print job is completed."

Can't get it to work

My disappointments with this printer started when I realized that it would not work wirelessly, even if I plugged it into the router. They continued when I couldn't even get it to work while plugged into my laptop. My old Samsung ML-1740 is still kicking, but this one seems to be a dud. I will accept tips and revise my review if anyone can help me get it running.

Good printer, inexpensive, fast, dual sided saves paper

Used the Brother single side printer. This dual side printing is as fast and saves paper. If you don't need color do all your printing on this one. Separate toner and drum make consumables cheaper.

Great buy for $100!

I ordered two of these for the office, for small print jobs. The main reason for ordering it is because it has a duplex feature and for $120, it was a steal! It was easy to install and very easy to use.

Great duplex printer

This is the best value for a duplex printer that I have seen. Small footprint and excellent quality printing
