almost perfectWorks exactly as advertised. The only downside is the long energy star warm-up. Great bullet proof software. The perfect cure for HP frustration blues.
NOT All-in-one !!! WHERE IS THE FAX ???This a total scam... any printer that is advertised as being "All-in-one" must include a Fax function, but this printer does not have it! BEWARE deceptive title! SHAME ON YOU brother, for claiming this is all-in-one even though it lacks Fax!
Good Value, Easy to Set UpI've only been using this printer for a few days, so I might amend this review later. I'm giving it 4 stars for now, because it was good value for money and very easy to set up.
It's not perfect by any means. Compared to my last color laser printer, this one has a VERY flimsy paper output catcher. And the envelope feeder is, well, pretty much unusable as far as I can see. I tried it about 6 times using a standard envelope and every time it returned a "paper jam" error message even before it tried to pull the envelope in. Open the top of the machine, pull out and reinsert each of the 4 drums, try again, it works the next time. Fortunately I hardly ever print envelopes, so not a major factor for me, I was just testing the functions out. But the flatbed scanner/copier makes it worthwhile for me and I was able to move my old standalone flatbed out of my office.
I've noted the other comments about toner usage, but I can't comment on that yet. I've used many other color laser printers and they have all been very expensive on toner and supplies. It does have a setting to use less toner.
This laser printer eats ink cartridgesPeople always say that laser printers use less ink than InkJet printers and are more economical. The cartridges are rated 1400 pages (color) and 2200 pages (B&W), but that seems to me to be a complete fabrication. Despite the fact that I use email and scan as much as possible, have a 1-person office, and am acutely aware of not wasting trees and ink, I have had to buy a new cartridge at least once a month. The ink cartridges cost up to $85 each. I didn't have much choice because I have a MAC, but I certainly recommend considering the cost of ink cartridges and looking at other printers.
Poor paper handlingThis printer is all but incapable of printing envelopes and, in general, does not handle paper well. For example, the single sheet feeder is very unreliable and the automatic document feeder has trouble with documents that have had staples removed. It is a great scanner, but do not expect to be able to print on a variety of paper.
WonderfulI have had this printer for almost a month, and I have been very happy with it. I had some minor trouble getting all the computers in the network to talk to it. I had to create a custom TCP/IP port on each computer and point it to the static IP address of the printer. But everything else went extremely smoothly. The colors are very good and accurate, and even better when set to high-resolution and "Vivid" (of course, that will use more toner).
The printer configuration window is well laid out and very clear. Copies look great.
My lights dim when the printer starts up, but the printer is fast and quiet. This is an excellent printer at an excellent price.
[Update 6/13/2010]
The manual paper feed on this printer is terrible. It only takes one sheet at a time, and won't grab the paper unless the printer is warmed up. The printer is only warmed up within 30 seconds of printing anything, so in order to do a manual feed, you first have to print something else just to warm up the printer. Also, there is no support for the manual feed, so the paper just ends up hanging down in front of the printer.
Other than this, we still love the printer and it has been very efficient in how much toner it uses, despite what some other reviews claim. We are still only halfway through the starter toner cartridges that came with the printer.
Flawless setup and function with Snow LeopardI purchased this printer based on the review of a fellow Amazon user, who mentioned its great compatibility with Snow Leopard, as well as its very affordable price for everything it offers.
A loyal HP printer user for many years, I decided to save a couple hundred bucks and try my luck with this machine. I was sold on its many features and low price.
I was so pleased with how simple this printer was to set up. From box to print was about 8 minutes, most of that time spent removing tape from the unit and loading the toner cartridges. Network setup was instant: I connected an ethernet cable to my router (which is connected to my cable modem) and POOF -- just by printing something from Word, my Snow Leopard downloaded and installed the appropriate software, and it printed a gorgeous document. I never even needed to insert the CD (but I think I will when I try to use the PC to print to it via the network).
I wanted just one printer that all of the family members' computers could print to; this printer has successfully replaced both our black-and-white laser and our inkjet printers.
Pros:
wireless network printing
full color laser printing
600 x 2400 DPI (others have higher but I don't need higher resolution; in fact my eye can't tell the difference!)
flatbed scanning
flatbed copying
compatibility with both Macs and PCs
easy setup (at least on a Mac)
fast printing (17 pages/minute)
Cons:
no fax capabilities
no duplex printing
relatively small flatbed
maximum width for paper feed 8.5"
doesn't come with cables (make sure you have an extra USB and/or ethernet cable)
comes with "starter" toner, and replacements are about $70/each (and there are four)
If you're looking for a do-it-all, good-quality full color printer, don't need a fax, don't print large documents, and don't need to do much double-sided printing, you can't go wrong with this printer!
Great printer! We got this just before Christmas and had it set up in about an hour. Works great from either computer. A bit noisey, but we are not using it contunially. The envelope feature is great and easy to use for different sizes. Generally well pleased with product.
Excelent value for the money!I have been a fan of brother printers since I got the HL-5140 years ago! I am a home user but want and need a printer that will be reliable and dependable for more than 1 year, I hate ink jet printers!
Color printing is great. It's not meant to be a photo printer but it did a decent job on the photos for my daughter's science project. Printing Text is crisp and great - both Black and White and Color!
Scanning (from a PC) works excellently and is very easy to do and isn't cluttered down and overly complicated the way HP makes their scanning software...
Copying is fast and easy with the auto feeder both Black and White and Color copies are perfect.
Setting this printer up on a network was very easy - picked up an IP Address and the Printer install software found it with no problem and was setup in just a few minutes (without any bloatware). Works with Windows 7 x64... Oh and after I had it installed it downloaded and installed a firmware patch for the printer, it's nice to know that the firmware will be kept up to date without me having to check for updates.
Unpacking the printer and setting it up was easy - it's big and heavy but I was able to go from the box to a working printer in about 15 minutes by my self.
Good Product - But Brother went cheap on the toner!I've owned 2 other printers & all in 1's from Brother. One of the reasons I always gave Brother high marks was because most other manufacturers put starter ink or toner cartridges in their products, but not Brother; that is until now!
If they cut corners on something this low cost you have to wonder what else they went cheap on.
A new black toner cartridge is good for 2500 sheets, if you check the specs you'll see that the one it comes with is a "starter" toner cartridge, only 1000 sheets, they did the same with the color cartridges too. They already saved money by making this a non-duplex machine.
