Awesome printerI am a nursing student who relies heavily on a printer. Lots of paperwork. I scan a bunch as well. Setup was nearly flawless with the network software helper. Installed software on multiple computers on network including XP, Vista, and 7. No conflicts and users anywhere can control their own print settings. Scan feature is awesome and customizable. Worst feature=cost of toners, but I found an online company that supplies cheap but very good toner. I love this printer, and the auto duplexer saves paper and time. Decent speeds too.
I don't usually do reviews but...I am very surprised at how poorly my new Brother printer performed. Straight out of the box I had large dark black lines running down the left and right margin. I trouble shot with customer service four times before the in-house service call was arranged. A month and a half later the unit is at a regional repair shop.
I considered returning it but decided to repair under warranty because of return freight cost and the hope that it could be repaired successfully and become the highly rated printer I thought I was buying. At this point I remain frustrated and disappointed.
Great Expectations RealizedThis is my first multifunction machine and in almost all aspects surpassed my expectations. The only function that needs some work is the OCR function. This is most probably a function of the software that is required for OCR ability. Extremely satisfied with this MFC.
Excellent printer for home or small officeThis is an excellent machine for a home or small office, here are pros and cons:
- Good quality business prints and presentation documents; photo prints are average, somewhat grainy, color is not accurate out of the box
- Excellent speed: prints one page of Google search in about 10-15 sec (from hitting Print button on the computer to picking up the sheet from the printer); when waking up from Deep Sleep mode printing takes a minute and a half; both color and black print equally fast
- Can scan to network share without computer assistance: put documents into scanner, select scan and you PDF is waiting for you when you return to your desk; no need to install complicated software
- Excellent power management: extremely low power usage and completely silent in Deep Sleep mode; instantly ready to scan; no need to turn off between use
- Prints duplex but does not scan duplex
- Toner and drums are separate, so you spend less since each lasts different number of pages (unlike most HP machines)
- Scanner is fast but tilts pages somewhat, could be straighter
- Since this is a laser printer, toner lasts indefinitely when not used (unlike ink-jets)
Great Product at a Great Price!I've had this printer for nearly a week now and I couldn't be happier. Exactly what I was looking for. I've printed mostly invoices and some design projects and the quality is great!
Brother All in One laser printerJust purchased the Brother MFC 9460CDN all in one machine frpm Amazon and couldn't be happier . it does everything we want it to do , but don't expect duplex printing to be a time saver. you still have to turn the docs over so it it really is not a huge feature. Best of all the price was very low compared to all other sources we checked out.
It was shipped promptly as promised and we had it in just a few days. For those who say it is a bit noisy, my answer would be ,Not Really, it is a printer!!!!!
BewareI ordered this printer because Amazon had the best price and I trust Amazon to stand behind what they sell. True to form, the shipment arrived on time and as described.
I hooked it up and Windows 7 immediately recognized the printer and I was up and ready to print. I bought this printer for two reasons: I need a color laser printer, and also need to do light scanning, maybe 60 pages a week. I didn't want to shell out another $500-$750 for a dedicated sheet-fed scanner. This multi-function printer seemed to fill the bill.
I followed the installation instructions, inserted the CD and followed the onscreen directions. Everything installed, or so it seemed. I was able to get the scanner to make exactly one scan, as a bmp. I tried several times, but couldn't get it to work with Acrobat. Acrobat wouldn't recognize the unit no matter what I did. I figured it was just a matter of tweaking a setting here and there, but suddenly the scanner just quit working. I couldn't get anything to recognize it, and even re-installed the software thinking maybe a file was missing, or corrupted. Nope. The final cut was when the printer went into sleep mode, and wouldn't wake up without being switched off and unplugged.
The included software disc comes with several programs, including a free version of Adobe Acrobat 9. However, the installation routine never asks you if you want to install anything individually, it just asks if you want to continue installing the Brother software. I forgot that the unit ships with a free version of Acrobat 9, because I already own it. This damned thing installed its own version of Acrobat 9 over mine without any warning. I had to uninstall their version, reinstall my Adobe download and go find the serial numbers of Acrobat 9 as well as Acrobat 6, the version I upgraded from. Thanks, Brother, but some people actually already own certain programs and it's not an upgrade to use an OEM licensed product over the one they already paid for (and customized - that also pissed me off - I lost the settings and everything else that I'd already set up in Acrobat). The scanner software that comes with the unit is PaperPort, which is a kludge I've had to deal with before, and a couple of other minor league programs not worth mentioning. Scanning software seems to be one area of computing that doesn't really work that well, but I generally scan to directly to Acrobat, bypassing that problem. There was a control panel-type software program that allowed the user to access all the setup screens so one doesn't have to stand in front of the printer for an hour setting it up.
If you really need a multifunction printer, this one might be okay if you get a unit that works and skip the software as much as possible. I know, defective units happen, but it's frustrating to get one nonetheless. Had it not been for the software hassle, I might have asked for an exchange, but the software suite is so bad I just didn't ever want to see the name Brother on anything I own.
I can't say enough good things about Amazon - they immediately took the return, scheduled the pickup and the unit was on its way back to Amazon within 24 hours.
