    AWFUL MACHINE

Run away from this printer, screaming. Ink lasted me only about 10 days (i do a bit of printing each day, maybe 20 pages per day.) The printer itself started acting up after around the 3rd month i had it: a nice, dark line would appear down the middle of all my documents that i copied and there was nothing i could do about it. i changed ink cartridges, but that didn't help. Then i started getting an error message after it would print no more than 2 pages at a time. i would have to turn off the machine and wait no less than 60 seconds for it to reboot. I had to print 2 pages at a time, which took forever. I used to use only HP products but decided to try Canon after my last HP died. Big mistake. I went back to HP. Lasted me several years. Never will try Canon again.

    Not so good

After a long history with HP, I tried a Canon all-in-one printer. The price was right and it seemed to offer everything I was looking for - duplex print, copy, scan, and fax. The setup was not easy and the manual was difficult to follow. Set up took me the better part of a morning. I liked having an auxiliary paper tray, though the main tray had a tiny capacity. The printer turned out to be a major ink hog. I don't print a lot and print very seldom in color. I had to replace each of the ink cartridges every several months, even printing in fast/grey scale mode. I tried many different settings and never could get the thing to play nice with the answering machine and automatically receive faxes. The last straw was when I started getting "printer not responding" messages. I replaced the ink and uninstalled and reinstalled the software. This, after going thought he printers useless troubleshooting utility. Goodbye Canon MX870.

    Wireless kept disconnecting

I bought the printer for its wireless connectivity, but every time the printer would go into some kind of "sleep" mode, the remote computers were unable to wake it up and print.
After hours of troubleshooting, I'm returning the printer.

    Wonderful printer but...

Wonderful printer for the price and easy to use, but the printer didn't come with an installation CD, which made it quite difficult to set up the wireless capabilities since the online software at Canon's website didn't have the wireless software for set up.

Great Printer to use, but bad, bad Printer to own !

You may ask? ... Why ??? ... OWN a Cannon MX870 Printer, (or a venomous snake for that matter), right?
Well, because you must like to spend money on the INK or on the antidote to the venomous snake bite !

Untill these Companies realize that we are on to ... "their games" ... of inexpensive, good performing printers and EXPENSIVE INK, well then, they may re-think their future marketing plans !

I have just purchased a new Kodak printer,(from Amazon), because I realized that to replace the ink modules on the MX870 was going to cost me $68 dollars and change. A new Kodak Printer is $100.00 dollars,(including it's ink).
Additional ink for this printer, (ESP 2170), is under $30 dollars.

Buyer, (and snake handlers), beware !

    Great Printer

Love this printer. It is easy to use and much faster and quieter than my previous one. It is also much more reliable. The quality of the printing is always great!

Exellent All-in-one, except can't scan Black & White (not grey scale)

The Canon PIXMA MX870 is an excellent all-in-one color printer. I just have one issue, it can scan Color and Grey-scale, but not Black & White. Scanning 10 pages of document in grey-scale and convert them to PDF, the PDF file is very large size, more than 10MB. This prevent us from using it to scan documents for sending via e-mail.

I have an old Brother MFC9420CN all-in-one printer, which allow scanning to Black & White, the scanned image is very clear (each pixel is either black or white), and small file size to package as PDF to send by e-mail.

    Poor quality and support

Do not buy a Cannon printer. On month 13 of ownership my MX870 printer quit printing all black colors. It took me a month to call support as spent many days trying to solution the problem myself as I had assumed it just needed cleaning or something. I called a month later. 14 months after ownership. The message I received from Canon support was that it was out of warranty by two months so I would have to pay the full price to get it repaired at a service center. I think one can find a printer from other printer manufacturers that don't require them to be replaced or repaired at a cost of $200 every 14 months.

On top of this the printer seems to go through ink extremely fast. I have a bunch of extra now I will sell someone if they are interested.
