Perfect for my purposeI'm a medical student who prints out about 20 pages (double sided) of lecture notes with pictures and diagrams in full color. the 12/ppm black and 8ppm color is plenty of speed for my purpose and its print quality is as good as the HP4500DN I use at school library. I've owned this printer for about 2 months and printed ~1000 pages with Staples copy paper. Quality has been consistently excellent and I've not experience a jam even once. No automated duplex but manual is easy enough.
The printer comes with starter cartridges with these capacities
colors (3X, yellow, cyan, magenta): 700 pages each(1/2 of new cartridge)
Black: 700 pages(1/3 of new)
so no it's not cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the cartridges.
I just replaced the black cartridge a few days ago and my color cartridge is still showing ~800 pages left. This is unexpected because they started at 700. I guess the printer evaluate your ink usage and displays the amount of ink left accordingly. If that's so, apparently I use much less than HP expected, even though there's usually one color picture for every slide I print out. No complains here.
Good Printer but,do not buy toner when the little windows pops up on your display, it is not the choice use you will be buying toner to early. Do this to get the correct toner level; press and hold the green button for about 4 seconds and release then the printer will print out the correct levels that you have left.
Average color laserIt does an acceptable job printing color documents, nothing spectacular. It's about as fast as the inkjet that is the alternate to this printer, about the same on the noise level, it's noticeable, but not to the point of being objectionable. Colors are somewhat dull, not nearly as jump off the page as one might like. But at the price, it's not unexpected either. I wouldn't consider this to be an office level printer, closer to a personal printer that has a fairly fast print time
I got the printer from officemax on a deep discount sale, so I can't really complain too much about the printer. It prints documents that don't have the probability to fade like inkjets, which was the main purpose for me getting the printer.
Doesn't work with OS XSadly for me this printer doesn't work with a Mac. WTF?
I had to return this. Very disappointing Christmas gift!
Good office workhorseThis is a great printer with the well deserved reputation of HP. We use it regularly, putting a lot if 'miles'on it. Great buy, especially at the price from vendor. Printer aarived promplty and put to work right out pf the box.
Great printer! This is a great printer, especially for the price! We have used HP printers for years, and are never disappointed. Printing is fast, high quality, and so far, it seems to be easy on toner. The setup was easy, but of course the CD wanted to install several unnecessary programs. I would recommend this printer to anyone.
Not Mac compatibleWe have two computers, a PC and a Mac laptop. For the price, this seemed like a great option since we wanted a color laser printer. Be aware that this printer is NOT Mac compatible. HP does not supply a Mac driver, nor is one readily available on the web.
Beware: Refurbished printer arrives without cartridges.Beware: Refurbished printer arrives without cartridges. Since cartridges cost over $100, it is much cheaper to buy a new printer that arrives with the new cartridges.
Excellent for documents but not for photographsI bought this printer as I have given up on Ink Jets. I am a keen photographer and at times spent $200 during a single weekend for Ink on my A3+ (13" x 19") Canon printer as you really had to buy 2 photo magenta and 2 photo cyan cartridges to go with the magenta, cyan, black and yellow and some weekends I needed two sets (2 x 8 x $12.50). When yellow failed to print and estimates were as much as a print head, I moved to this low cost laser. Despite all the good comments about photo print quality; don't believe it. You can print nice brochures etc but photos are dull and dark and put to shame by your local pharmacy or online printing services. I now have all my prints done on line by Kodak or Adorama. As a general purpose color printer this one is very good but has the normal curl tendency of all color lasers when large areas of color are printed on thin paper. It should be noted the color cartridges are full sized while the printer comes with short filled starter units, so buying a new printer isn't cheaper. I too have used this printer with Windows Vista Home 32, Ultimate 64 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 RC with no problems.
Best Laser for the CostI bought this laser after much research. I have $2500.00 lasers at work, the quality of this printer is amazing and prints with the same great resolution as the $2500.00 printer. I needed a printer at home for my graphic design projects. The only con is that it does not have duplex, but for the cost no problem turning pages over. To get the maximum resolution recommend HP Color Laser Invent paper, 28lb/96 bright. Got it on sale, one of my better purchases.
