Great unit, especially for the price. While the warmup and time between some pages can be a bit extensive, overall this unit is an amazing deal. I was disappointed to learn that I couldn't print on 5.5 X 17 ("Ledger" size cut in half), but if I'd read more I'd have known that before I bought the unit (max width = 8.5", max length = 14"). Color is great. Web interface isn't bad. You will need a wired connection in order to turn on the wireless, though, if you're planning on connecting by WiFi.
Not so simpleThis is a nice printer priced competitively. It is slow but that doesn't bother me because I don't print much. Wireless setup has not done well, however. Tech support at HP was easy to get on the phone but they didn't solve the problem. I have an older offbrand wireless router supplied by my cable company and the HP tech person couldn't get it to recognize the printer. There are options at this point but all involve moving the printer and hooking it up via ethernet cable to my router which is at the other end of the house. I will need to set aside a couple of hours for this and there's no guarantee it will work. When all is done the problem may get solved and I can return to printer to its original spot but none of the reviewers whose opinion I trusted before I bought this ran into this kind of problem. The printer works fine when hard wired to my computer but I bought it for the wireless option.
Awesome! This is a pretty awesome printer! I bought mine to get out of the ink cartridge dilemma! My kids and I have so much homework to print, as soon as my black and white laser died... I went to a color laser and I have never looked back. This appears to be a very economical printer at a extremely reasonable price. Once I started printing, I realized I had amazing print quality for an affordable price! I bought my new printer from Amazon and it was actually cheaper than purchasing a factory refurbished unit from an unspecified leading lowest price outlet.
Built like a tank.I should preface this review by stating this printer replaced our previous Samsung CLP-315W Color Laser Printer, and use that as a comparison. Unfortunately, that piece of junk lasted us almost exactly three years and went kaput without warning and a full box of toner I got stuck with.
My wife and I have both used HP Laserjets at our respective jobs and rarely, if ever, have had an issue with them. I also own a Deskjet that gets used for scanning and photo printing. We have rarely had issues with HP printers so this was a no-brainer purchase for us.
Things I like: It is built like a tank, weighs in somewhere around 45lbs--it's not a light or dainty printer by any stretch. It's a solid piece of machinery, no rattles or anything. The toner tray is excellent--compared to our previous Samsung printer, this thing makes swapping the toner a lot easier by placing them vertically rather than horizontally on a pull-out tray. Excellent design for accessing the toner.
Printing via Mac or via AirPrint with an iPad was chimp-simple, required almost no time to setup. The wireless configuration was not hard to setup either, requiring no direct hookup to setup the wireless printing function. ePrint is basically "cloud printing" and it does work, it's very easy to setup too.
Things I didn't like: Like I said, it is remarkably heavy. This is not for the faint of back so you may need a friend or family member to help you move it. Toner that comes with it is only "introductory size" and is rated for approximately 700 pages.
Things that could be improved: I really can't think of any except a form-feed button to manually feed paper.
Amazing. Works perfectly. Set up easy as 1,2,3Nothing left to do but smile smile smile. Set up easy and works like it should. I recommend. I like it so much I bought one for home and one for the office. Works seamlessly with iprint from iPad and iPhone.
Hate This PrinterMy words cannot adequately express my hatred for this product. It prints INCREDIBLY slowly over my wireless network, I had to borrow a Snow Leopard machine to set it up since it doesn't support OS X Lion, once it actually starts printing it is also slow. I cannot believe this many generations into laser printers HP is selling such a dud.
Great printer perfect for Home/school workI bought this printer for home use. With 4 children in school we are constantly printing. We have had several different printers HP, Cannon, Lexmark and Brother and dot-matrix(showing my age), inkjet, laser and color laser. I have computers running XP, Vista, Windows 7. The toner last a lot longer than inkjet cartridges and does not dry out. This was perhaps the easiest printer I have ever installed. I am using it wireless. It connected with both laptops (wireless), both desktops(wired), my iPhone found it immediately, and there was no problem setting up the ePrint, it does require internet access. Eprint basically gives your printer and email address (you can pick it)@hpeprint.com. You then can print to your home computer from anywhere you can send email. There are settings so you don't have to worry about spam. You can configure eprint to only print in black and white, set the print quality and even set it to only print emails from specified email addresses. You can log onto the control panel from any web browser and change these settings. So far I have no complaints about this printer. I don't know about office use but it does a great job for our home network.
Excellent printer!I love this printer. Colored documents and day to day printing look amazing. I'm just using it as my home printer, so the speed hasn't really been an issue for me, and in fact, it's faster than my older inkjet anyways, so it's been a huge improvement. The wireless feature has been extremely helpful. I had an issue getting my macbook to reconnect to it after the printer went into power saving mode, but I assigned it a static IP address per one of the suggestions in the reviews, and I've never had a problem since. Airprint works perfectly too. I never really intended on using that feature, but it's helped a few times when I had my iphone on, but not the mac, and had to print something while I was running out the door. I was a little concerned that I was giving up some of the flexibility of being able to print on different types of papers moving away from the inkjet that I had, but we printed out a bunch of invitations that were on special paper not necessarily designed for laserjets, and they came out perfectly. They were actually the most professional looking homemade invitations we've ever made.
As for photos, I agree with some of the other reviewers that it doesn't really make much financial sense to print out photos from home anymore. Walgreens, Walmart, Snapfish, and just about anywhere else is cheaper than printing at home nowadays, and the quality is usually betters anyways, so I wasn't really concerned about giving up my photo inkjet for this color laserjet. Also, I've printed out several hundred documents in color so far, and last time that I checked, I had only used about 10-20% of the sample cartridges that are included with the printer, so for regular home use, these should last me a while. It's just an excellent printer all around.
Not "wireless" if you have Mac OS X Lion! After a lot of frustration trying to get a wireless connection with my Mac OS X "Lion", I contacted HP's technical assistance. They told me that they were working on it, but wireless on this printer doesn't yet work with Lion.
Message to HP: Hello!? Anyone there!? Apple has been talking about Lion for months and developing it even earlier. Has this caught you by surprise???
From opening to printing in 10 minutesWe needed to do some color printing. Within 10 minutes of getting the printer I was up and running. All the critical info is provided on a handy sheet on top of the printer. It was connected to one computer via USB and quickly shared across the network. In order to install on another machine you must find the driver on the provided CD. This is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. For some reason Windows or the Printer cannot provide the info required to auto pull the driver. First printer in many years to have this problem.
We've printed about 100 color pages thus far and it's working very well. Print quality is as good as our FedEx laser prints of old. Very happy.
My other complaint is I wish it handled the tray better. It's a little finicky if you want to have two types of paper in the printer.
Good all round color laser, you cannot beat it for the money.
Edit - finally ran out of toner and I see the refills are the cost of a new printer. We bought a toner refill kit on amazon, and in about 15 minutes of topping things up, prints are great. $60 for new toner vs $250 is more in line with what tonner is worth. Wish companies weren't so greedy. Would buy HP toner if it were $80-$100 but they're joking if they think toner is worth $250.
